Renting a luxury yacht is, actually, the best option to visit popular destinations worldwide, which, at times, are accessible only by this mode of transportation.
In this article, our charter broker Remi van der Deure will explain in detail all the elements involved in yacht charter cost: size and type of the yacht, destination, charter contract, the duration of the charter, and other costs involved.
Factors in the cost of a yacht charter
If one is about to charter a yacht, he may get puzzled with the two main options: an all-inclusive or separated charge options.
In this article, we would be focusing our attention on “Plus Expenses” charter.
Shipyard
As a generale rule, the two main determinants of the charter cost of a yacht are the length and pedigree of the yacht and type. Chartering a prestigious new Feadship or Amels-a Dutch quality superyacht-is more expensive than chartering a yacht of the same size built by a lesser-known shipyard.
There are good reasons for this: for example the cost of building a new superyacht to a high standard, with a bespoke interior, sound and vibration insulation, etc
Superyacht’s weekly charter rate can be up to €1.5m+ per week ex VAT and expenses. (93m Feadship Lady S)
New yacht Vs older yacht
A newer yacht will be chartered at a higher charter rate than a similar but older yacht.
Popular destination
Another factor influencing the price of the charter is the destination.
The popular Mediterranean and Caribbean tend to be quite expensive, while the less popular destinations are a little easier on the pocket. Even in popular destinations, the time of year could make a difference in cost: high season versus low season. The prices during peak season can sometimes be higher than those during the off-season by 10% to 15%.
Portofino is a famous Italian hotspot for all Italian yacht charter.
Specific amenities
Luxury yachts with state-of-the-art facilities, the most advanced stabilization system, and entertainment systems fall into the same category; hence, it will be higher in price to charter than more basic yachts.
Charter contract
The right choice of charter contract can significantly impact both the price and your overall holiday experience. In France, a transport contract benefits from a reduced VAT rate (10% or even 0% instead of 20%). Additionally, tax-free fuel is available with this type of contract. Unfortunately, not all charter managers and owners accept transport contracts.
Charter duration
Another considerable factor influencing yacht charter cost is of course the duration of the charter.
Most yachts are chartered by the week but a few can be by days. Price is dependent on the length of the charter, so the longer the period the less the daily rate. You can get the best value by chartering for longer because the owner is always happy to secure a longer charter.
Additional expenses
Besides the basic charter fee, there are a number of additional costs one needs to be aware of. These include fuel costs, dockage fees, provisioning, and crew gratuities. The fuel costs can be quite high, especially if you will charter a fast-sport yacht and intend to travel long distances at high cruising speed.
The dockage fees also depend on the destination. Some marinas charge more than others: St-Tropez, Porto Cervo….
Provisioning is another extra that adds up rather quickly; this would include food and drink, which can be bought in advance of charter, or can be arranged through the yacht charter company.
Finally, tips for the crew are standard in the yachting industry, and are normally between 10% and 20% of the base charter fee.
