How long can you charter a yacht?

7 September 2024

In high season, luxury yachts can generally be chartered for a minimum of 5 or 7 days, with the option of longer charters lasting weeks or even months.

The general duration of a yacht charter is driven by a number of factors such as your budget, the yacht availability, the owner’s and yacht’s maintenance schedule, the charter company, and your own preferences.

Owner's preference...

Some of the yacht owners do not like to give out their yacht for a month or so.

This might be because of any specific reason such as a personal use of the yacht or keeping worries about the wear and tear that will occur on the vessel, or keeping concerns about the cost for its maintenance and upkeep during the extended charter period.

Besides, some owners may prefer to give a shorter charter time for their yacht to maximize gains or for the convenience of using the vessel themselves.

Maximum and minimum duration

The period within which you can charter a luxury yacht can vary according to:

  1. the specific yacht,
  2. its maintenance,
  3. the charter company,
  4. the owner’s preference,
  5. the crew,
  6. the duration of the charter season
  7. and of course your planned itinerary, budget, and preferences.

Typical yacht charter duration

Generally, summer Mediterranean yacht charters range from 7 to 10 days. That leaves plenty of time to explore the French Riviera or Corsica.

In some cases, longer charters-two weeks or even several months-can be possible under expedition yacht charter. Shoulder season luxury yacht charters are more lenient regarding scheduling and enable clients to charter at times convenient to them and their particular needs.

Seasonality

On the other hand, in high season, most of the luxury yacht charters of 35m+ yacht have a minimum length of at least one week.

With longer lengths of time, there is often a considerable rise in the price for the charter of a luxury yacht, and so due consideration should be given to how this can fit into your budget and itinerary before committing to a long-term charter.

Longer-term charters (exploration charter for example) may also be less accessible because fewer numbers of yachts are available; thus, it is in your interest to plan well ahead and book early.

Remi van der Deure, our Senior Charter Broker, says: “It is always best to go through a reputable yacht charter company and discuss your needs with a charter broker to get a better idea of how much time you will need to explore a particular area at your own pace.”
