Yacht Charter Etiquette: Do’s and Don’ts

1 February 2025

New to yacht charter?
Here are some do’s and don’ts which will be useful for you and your guests to be a better charterer, and fully enjoy your luxury yacht experience.

Do's

  • Fill out the Preferences Form well in advance so your crew may prepare your yacht according to your particular needs and tastes.
  • Once onboard, do show respect to the crew and let them know about your decision in advance.
  • Barefoot policy: this is a deeply rooted tradition to preserve the condition of expensive teak decking.
  • Anticipate the time the crew will need to clean the cabins.
  • Be flexible concerning your itinerary, depending on the weather, and especially if you decide to book a last minute charter.

Dont's...

  • Do not throw your rubbish into the sea and do not waste fresh water.
  • Do not leave the crew to babysit your children
  • Do not do anything illegal on board (drugs, weapons…).
  • Do not smoke in the no-smoking areas inside and outside the yacht
  • Do not enter the crew areas without permission.

Remi van der Deure, Charter Broker at Charterminte adds: “It is a good idea to have a copy of your personal documents with you when you leave the yacht. As always, ask your charter broker, the captain or crew for advice on what is best.

Remi van der Deure also underscores the importance of securing a valid passport, obtaining the requisite visas, and finalizing all charter contract documentation prior to embarkation.
